Physiotherapy Services

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise-based system that aims to develop the body's "centre" in order to create a stable core for all types of movement. Pilates strengthens, stretches and mobilises the body and is used by Physiotherapists to rehabilitate both injuries and chronic problems. Through the process of regular sessions, the body's structure realigns and a balance is achieved within the musculo-skeletal system. Eventually the body will move with maximum efficiency and minimum effort.

Clinical Pilates

Pilates TrainingA Clinical Pilates treatment at Strong Life Physiotherapy will involve working on specially designed equipment such as the reformer, the trapeze bed, or the barrel.

Exercises are performed primarily against the resistance or with assistance of tensioned springs, in order to isolate and develop specific muscle groups.

The Exercises aim to retrain efficient movement and good posture. Training in effective breathing is also given if appropriate.

Both the Clinical Pilates program and the Pilates Floor Class program at Strong Life Physiotherapy starts with an assessment by a physiotherapist.  If the physiotherapist decides that a Clinical Pilates program is appropriate an individual program will be developed on a card over the first 3 individual sessions. Then a client can usually continue their program in a group of three working with a physiotherapist. This ensures a high level of personal attention, maximising a person's potential without risking injury.

Later a client who has a good knowledge of their program is allowed to progress to using their program unsupervised. (Pilates gym) These clients are reassessed by the physiotherapist every 6-8 weeks and their program is upgraded.

If the physiotherapist assesses that a client is suitable for Pilates floor exercise classes they can discuss availability of places with the receptionist.
